“Now comes what I perhaps inflatedly call my philosophy of knitting. Like many philosophies, it is hard to express in few words. Its main tenets are enjoyment and satisfaction, accompanied by thrift, inventiveness, an appearance of industry, and above all, resourcefulness.”
-Elizabeth Zimmermann, in Knitting without Tears
I love that bit about the “appearance of industry”. This is one of my favorite things about knitting. I look busy. I feel productive. Even if I end up ripping out two evenings worth of work, I still feel that I am an industrious and resourceful person. In truth, I may be curled up on the couch with my cat watching handsome young men in green shorts, but my fingers are moving really quickly, and I am getting things done!
And just to make sure there is never an idle moment:
I have this gorgeous yarn from one of the worlds’ premier hand dyers and I am going to make a nifty and practical headband for Nellie to wear this holiday season. And the sweater is knitting along nicely. I find industry inspiring.
